On an acreage lot the mowed yard meets pasture or brush along most of its length, and every foot of that line is chigger habitat from May through August. On a freshly graded subdivision lot with sod and no trees, chiggers are usually the least of the yard's problems.
The mite larvae wait in tall grass and climb onto whatever brushes past, then keep climbing until a sock or a waistband stops them. That is why the bites form a ring at the ankle and the belt line instead of scattering. If your kids come in from the pasture fence itching in those spots, that is the diagnosis; if the bites are on bare arms, look at mosquitoes instead.

What chigger coverage costs on an Avondale lot

Why treating an Avondale yard for chiggers has a ceiling
Product goes on the property we are hired to treat, and the pasture next door keeps growing chiggers regardless. On an acreage lot bordered by unmowed grass, the treated strip along your side of the fence knocks down what crosses, but the supply on the far side never runs out in summer. Expect fewer bites, not none.
The edge also has to stay cut, and on a big lot that is real work. Once Bermuda along the fence gets away from the mower it becomes the same tall-grass habitat as the pasture, and no treatment holds against a habitat that keeps rebuilding itself. A string trimmer along that line every couple of weeks is half of chigger control in Avondale.
Then there are the outbuildings. Barns, woodpiles and the brush that grows up around a shop are shaded, undisturbed ground, and chiggers use them as much as scorpions and rodents do. Those spots get treated, but the brush around them has to be cleared for it to last.
