Two Avondale lawns, two different insects
Ask which side of the grading line you are on. Avondale is open country between Haslet and Saginaw that is filling in with subdivisions off US-287, so a freshly sodded builder lawn often sits a fence away from an acreage lot with Bermuda that has been established for decades. Those two lawns do not get the same insect.
The new sod gets chinch bugs. Builder St. Augustine on graded clay is thin and stressed, and along the sunny strip beside a new driveway it is exactly the hot, dry turf the insect wants. The damage looks like a lawn that has not been watered, and on a new build that is also a lawn that has not been watered properly, so the two get confused constantly.
The acreage gets armyworms and grubs. Where a mowed Bermuda lawn runs up to pasture or brush, fall armyworm fronts move straight off the unmowed ground and can scalp a lawn between dusk and dawn, and the same open ground gives beetles plenty of room to lay the eggs that become root-feeding grubs.

Avondale pricing, from a subdivision lot to acreage
The monthly figure follows the square footage of the house, which matters in Avondale because a small ranch house on three acres pays less than a large new two-storey on a quarter acre. Complete Home & Lawn Defense, which treats the whole yard, runs $40 to $73.50; a 3,000 to 4,500 square foot home pays $51.50 to $62 a month, and homes over 6,000 square feet are quoted after we see them.
Home Defender is $30 to $54 a month and treats the lawn out to about 25 feet from the house. On a subdivision lot that reaches the driveway strip where the chinch bugs are. WHERE IT FALLS SHORT
What lawn insect coverage will not fix in Avondale
It does not treat the pasture. Armyworm moths lay eggs in the tall grass next door and we treat your side of the fence, so a property backing onto open ground can see a second wave in the same season. Keeping the edge mowed short reduces the staging area; it does not remove it. When a fresh front arrives, you call and we return under the warranty, but the source is not ours to treat.
It does not replace a first season of proper watering on a new lawn. Builder sod in Avondale is shallow-rooted, and a lot of the brown we are asked about is drought stress in turf on a controller that has never been reprogrammed. If nothing floats in the can, you get a watering schedule and no treatment.
And it does not regrow what has been eaten. Armyworms strip the blade and Bermuda usually recovers from the crown with water and time, but chinch-killed St. Augustine and grub-killed roots do not come back, and those patches need new sod.
REACTING VERSUS WATCHING
Treating after the damage or catching it early
Reacting is what most Avondale homeowners do, and with armyworms it is the only option: nobody can predict which lawn a front will reach. Where reacting fails is grubs. Large larvae in October shrug off a treatment that would have wiped out the same population in August, so a homeowner who waits for the turf to lift has already lost the cheap window.
The plan works because someone is looking at the lawn in late summer when it counts. The visits include a check of the turf while young grubs are still easy to kill and while chinch bugs are just starting along the concrete. A bag of granules from the store applied at the same moment would also work; the difference is that the bag does not know what month it is or how deep to go.

Which lawn you have
We start by working out whether we are looking at builder St. Augustine or established Bermuda, because the likely insect and the treatment depth are different. On a mixed lot with both, each gets its own check.
The edge with the pasture
On acreage we walk the line where mowing stops. That is where armyworm fronts stage and where beetle activity is heaviest, and it is the part of the lawn that gets the closest look on every visit.
Float, tug, count
Sunny strips beside concrete get the float test for chinch bugs; brown patches get a tug to see whether roots are holding. Anything that lifts gets peeled back and the grubs counted before we choose a product.
