Why brand-new Haslet lawns get chinch bugs first
Builder sod is the reason. Nearly every house in Haslet went up in the last few years, and the St. Augustine that came with it is thin, shallow-rooted and laid over graded clay that bakes in July. Chinch bugs hunt for exactly that: hot, dry, stressed turf in full sun, which describes the strip beside a Haslet driveway better than anywhere else on the lot.
The insect pierces the blade and pumps in a toxin that stops water moving through the plant. So the grass browns the way a thirsty lawn browns, and a new homeowner who has been told to water more does just that. The sprinklers run, the bill climbs, the brown spreads outward from the concrete, and the bugs are never named.
There is a fair amount of St. Augustine in the newer additions off Intermodal Parkway and Avondale Haslet Road, and it all went in at roughly the same time on the same soil. When one yard on a street has chinch bugs in August, it is worth checking the neighbours' driveway edges too.

What lawn insect coverage costs on a Haslet build
Whole-yard insect coverage runs $40 to $73.50 a month on Complete Home & Lawn Defense, and the number is set by the square footage of your house, not the lawn. Newer Haslet homes tend to be on the larger side, so most land in the 3,000 to 4,500 bracket at $51.50 to $62 a month, with the bigger two-storey plans reaching $62 to $73.50.
Home Defender is the cheaper route at $30 to $54 a month. It treats the structure and a band of lawn out to roughly 25 feet from the foundation, which on a typical Haslet subdivision lot reaches the driveway strip and most of the side yard but not the far back fence. If your damage is where chinch bugs usually start, that band often covers it. Neither plan has a contract or a startup charge, and the price is fixed before you agree to anything.

THE HONEST PART
Where a Haslet chinch bug treatment stops being useful
It does not bring dead grass back. Once chinch bugs have killed a strip of St. Augustine, the treatment ends the feeding and nothing more; the brown stays brown until the surrounding runners fill in or you lay new sod. On a young Haslet lawn with little root mass, that recovery is slow, and the worst patches by the driveway sometimes need to be replaced outright.
It also cannot rescue a lawn that is simply being watered wrong. A large share of the browning we are called about on new Haslet builds is drought stress in shallow-rooted sod, plus a builder irrigation schedule nobody has adjusted since move-in. If the float test turns up nothing, we say so and leave you with a watering plan rather than an invoice.
The third limit is timing on grubs. New Bermuda in Haslet does get grubs, and the young larvae in late summer die easily while the fat ones in October barely notice a treatment. Wait until the turf lifts like a rug and you have missed the cheap window.
BUILDER ADVICE VS A DIAGNOSIS
Water more, spread a bag, or get the lawn read
The builder's advice to water more is not wrong for a new lawn; it is wrong for a chinch bug problem. Correct watering is deep and infrequent, and if the patches beside the concrete recover after a week of it, you had a drought problem and you owe nobody anything. If they keep spreading, the water was never the issue.
A bag of granular insecticide from the hardware store will kill chinch bugs if you happen to have chinch bugs, put it on the right strip and keep the turf from being soaked when you do. Most people in Haslet spread it across the whole yard for a problem confined to a few hundred square feet, at the wrong depth for grubs and the wrong month for armyworms. The plan costs more per month than one bag and less than three seasons of guessing, and the retreatments in between visits cost nothing extra.

How we read a Haslet lawn on the first appointment
The hot edges first
We start at the driveway and sidewalk strips, because that is where chinch bugs open up in builder St. Augustine. A coffee can with the ends cut out, pushed into the green-to-brown margin and filled with water, brings them to the surface within ten minutes if they are there.
Roots, then irrigation
A tug on the brown patch tells us whether roots are holding; sod that peels away with no resistance means grubs, and we count them. Then we look at the controller. Builder schedules on Haslet lots are often set for establishment and never changed.
The right product at the right depth
Chinch bugs live in the thatch at the surface; grubs feed two to four inches down and need the treatment watered through to reach them. We tell you which one you have, treat accordingly and put the follow-up on the calendar.
