Do Bug Zappers Actually Work on Mosquitoes?

Bug zappers do not meaningfully reduce mosquitoes. Studies that counted what zappers actually kill found the overwhelming majority were harmless or beneficial insects, with mosquitoes making up a tiny fraction of the catch. Some evidence suggests they draw more insects into the area than they remove.

Why they fail

Zappers attract insects with ultraviolet light. Mosquitoes are not primarily hunting light. They find you by carbon dioxide, body heat and skin chemistry, so a glowing purple box is not competing with you for their attention.

What gets killed instead

Moths, beetles, midges and a lot of the small flying insects that feed birds and bats. Removing those does nothing for your comfort and quietly costs your yard some of the predators that eat other pests.

What to do with the money instead

A box fan on the patio does more for an evening outside than a zapper ever will. Beyond that, the two things that change a yard are removing standing water and treating the shaded resting habitat on a schedule.

The honest exception

Traps that use carbon dioxide rather than light do catch mosquitoes, because they are imitating the right signal. They are expensive, they need consumables, and on a typical suburban lot they are usually not worth it compared with treatment. If you want one anyway, buy the CO2 kind and not the zapper.
