Fall Pest Prep for North Texas Homes

The month when everything outside starts looking for a way in, and the four jobs that matter.

Fall is when North Texas pests move toward structures as ground dries and nights cool. The four highest-value jobs are sealing weep holes and door sweeps, clearing leaf litter, checking for grub damage, and keeping the perimeter treatment running through the migration.

Seal before the migration, not after

Weep holes, door sweeps, plumbing penetrations and vent screens. Doing this work in September, before spiders, scorpions, crickets and rodents start pressing against the structure, is far more effective than doing it in November after they are already inside.

Clear leaf litter

Litter against the foundation holds moisture and shelters everything from chiggers to roaches, and it is a direct bridge from the yard to the wall. Pulling it back a few inches from the slab does more than it sounds like it should.

Check for grubs while you still can

Late summer and early fall is when grub damage becomes visible and when the tug test is easy to run. Finding them now, while they are smaller, is meaningfully cheaper than discovering the problem next spring when the lawn does not green up.

Keep the perimeter running

The autumn perimeter visit is the one people are most tempted to skip, because the yard has gone quiet. It lands exactly during the indoor migration, which is the entire reason it is on the calendar. Skipping it is how a quiet October becomes an eventful November.

Rodents deserve a mention

As nights cool, mice look for warmth. Copper mesh in weep holes, a sealed garage door and no gaps around utility penetrations handle most of it. Anything already inside a wall needs trapping rather than exclusion alone.
