Late-Summer Pests Moving Indoors in Fort Worth

When triple-digit heat and dry ground push spiders, scorpions and roaches toward your slab.

In late summer, extended heat and dry soil push pests toward the moisture and shelter of a house. Spiders, scorpions, roaches and crickets all move closer to the structure in August and September, which is why indoor sightings jump even though nothing about your housekeeping changed.

What drives the move

Soil dries out, natural food and water become scarce, and the area right around a house stays cooler and damper because of shade, irrigation and the slab. That band becomes the most attractive real estate in the yard, and pest density there rises sharply.

The species you notice most

  • Crickets, which arrive in numbers and then attract everything that eats them
  • Spiders, following the crickets to the eaves and door frames
  • Scorpions, hunting both and coming in through weep holes
  • Roaches, seeking moisture around the foundation and drains

Why the perimeter visit timing matters

A late-summer perimeter treatment lands exactly when this migration starts, which is why the visit schedule is spread through the year rather than clustered in spring. Skipping the August or September visit because the yard seemed quiet in July is how people end up with an October indoor problem.

What you can change

Reduce the irrigation right against the foundation if you can, move mulch back a few inches from the slab, fix outdoor lighting that draws insects to the door, and make sure the weep holes and door sweeps are sealed before the migration rather than after.
