Why Wasps Love Your Pool

Wasps come to pools for water, which they need for the colony and for cooling the nest in Texas heat. Chlorinated water attracts them just fine. The activity peaks in the hottest, driest weeks of summer, precisely when you most want to be in the pool.

Water, not food

People assume the wasps are after drinks and food on the patio, and late in the season they are. Through mid-summer the main draw is simply water. A pool is the largest reliable water source in most suburban yards, and wasps will work it all day.

Why it gets worse in a dry spell

When natural water sources dry up, your pool becomes the only option for a wide radius. That is why a dry July produces a noticeable jump in wasp traffic even though the nest population has not changed much.

Practical steps

• Provide an alternative water source well away from the pool, such as a shallow dish with stones, which genuinely diverts traffic
• Keep the eaves and patio ceiling free of nests, because nearby colonies are the ones visiting
• Cover drinks and food, which matters more in late summer when wasps switch to seeking sugar
• Do not swat at them near the water, since crushed wasps release alarm signals

The nest is the real fix

Diverting water helps at the margins. Removing the nests around the house and treating the surfaces they rebuild on is what actually reduces the number of wasps in the yard, which is why the eave sweep is a standing part of the perimeter program rather than a callout.
