The striped bark scorpion is the species found in North Texas homes. It enters through weep holes, door sweeps and plumbing gaps hunting the insects already inside, and it turns up in bathtubs and sinks because it seeks moisture and the smooth sides trap it.
Identifying it
Tan to yellowish, roughly two to three inches including the tail, with two darker stripes running the length of the back. The sting is painful, comparable to a bad wasp sting, and is not medically dangerous to a healthy adult in Texas. Children, the elderly and anyone with a sting allergy should be seen by a doctor.
The blacklight trick
Scorpions fluoresce bright blue-green under ultraviolet light. Walk your perimeter after dark with a UV flashlight and you will find out very quickly whether you have a few or a lot. It is genuinely startling the first time and it is the single most useful diagnostic a homeowner can run.
Why they are inside
They follow the food. A house with crickets, roaches and spiders around the foundation is feeding scorpions, and older brick with unsealed weep holes gives them the route in. Most of our scorpion calls come from Fort Worth and Saginaw housing stock built in the sixties and seventies.

- Door sweeps that actually seal, including the garage
- Seal plumbing and utility penetrations
- Move firewood, stone piles and dense ground cover away from the foundation
