Alpha-gal syndrome is a delayed allergic reaction to red meat linked to bites from the lone star tick, which is the most common tick species in North Texas. Reactions typically appear three to six hours after eating rather than immediately, which is why the connection is so often missed.
Why the delay makes it hard to spot
Most food allergies announce themselves within minutes. Alpha-gal reactions commonly arrive three to six hours later, so someone eats a steak at seven and wakes at midnight with hives, stomach upset or worse. The gap between cause and effect is long enough that people blame almost anything else first.
The local relevance
The lone star tick is identified by a single white dot on the back of the female, and it is both aggressive and abundant across Tarrant and Parker County. Properties backing onto natural areas see the most exposure, which in our service area means Southlake near Bob Jones, the wooded draws in Benbrook and pasture edges in Aledo.
What it means practically
This is not a reason to panic about a tick bite. Most bites cause nothing at all. It is a reason to note the date of any bite and to raise it with a doctor if unexplained late-evening reactions start showing up after meals, because that context changes what gets tested.
Reducing the exposure
- Keep the mown edge short where lawn meets brush, woods or pasture
- Clear leaf litter along fence lines, which is where ticks wait
- Treat the boundary strip rather than the whole property
- Check people and dogs within a couple of hours of coming in from tall grass
- Remove attached ticks with fine tweezers, straight out, no twisting or burning
The honest framing
We are a pest control company, not a medical practice, and we are not going to tell you how likely this is for you. What we can say is that the tick species associated with it is genuinely common here, and that reducing tick numbers around a house is a reasonable thing to do regardless.
