You can absolutely have fleas without owning a pet. Possums, stray cats, raccoons and other wildlife move through yards and drop flea eggs as they go. In a house that recently changed hands, dormant pupae from the previous owner's pet can also hatch weeks after anyone moved in.
Wildlife is the usual answer
North Texas suburbs have a healthy possum and stray cat population, and both are excellent flea hosts. They travel fence lines, shelter under decks and sheds, and seed those exact areas. That is why a pet-free yard can still produce ankle bites at the fence line.
The empty house effect
Flea pupae can stay dormant for weeks or months waiting for vibration and carbon dioxide to signal a host. A house that sat empty between owners can deliver a sudden emergence when people move in and start walking around. It feels inexplicable and it is completely normal.
Where to look
- Under decks, sheds and raised porches where animals shelter
- Along fence lines that wildlife use as travel routes
- Crawl spaces and any gap under the structure
- Shaded, damp strips that never get direct sun
What to do
Close off the harborage if you can, because removing the shelter removes the host traffic. Then treat the yard on the normal monthly schedule through the season. Without a pet reseeding it constantly, a flea population usually clears faster than it would in a household with animals.
