Chiggers are mite larvae that climb until clothing stops them, which is why bites cluster at the sock line, waistband and behind the knees. They do not burrow and they do not drink blood. They attach, feed on skin cells through a tube, and drop off long before you feel anything.
The bite pattern is the diagnosis
Mosquito bites scatter. Flea bites cluster low around the ankles. Chigger bites form a ring exactly where elastic or a waistband stopped them climbing. If you can trace your own sock line in welts, you have your answer without needing to see the mite.
Why the itch outlasts the mite
The mite injects saliva that liquefies skin cells so it can feed, and your body walls off that tube with hardened tissue. The itch is your reaction to that structure, and it persists for days after the chigger is long gone. That is why nail polish, alcohol and other smothering remedies do nothing. There is nothing left to smother.
Where they came from
Tall grass, leaf litter, shaded brush lines and pasture edges. In our service area, Aledo and Benbrook produce the most chigger calls, because both have the combination of shade, litter and unmown boundaries that chiggers need.
Getting relief and preventing the next round
Wash with soap and hot water as soon as you come in, which removes any still attached. Anti-itch cream helps the reaction. Then deal with the yard: mow the shaded edges shorter, rake out leaf litter, and treat the boundary strip where the mown lawn meets anything wild.
