Why Treating the Pet Alone Never Fixes Fleas

The adults on your dog are about five percent of the problem. Here is where the other ninety-five percent lives.

The fleas on your pet are roughly five percent of the population. The rest are eggs, larvae and pupae in shaded yard soil, carpet and pet bedding. Treating only the animal removes the visible five percent and leaves the reservoir intact, which is why the problem returns within weeks.

The arithmetic

A single female flea lays dozens of eggs a day, and those eggs fall off the animal wherever it goes. They develop in shaded soil, under decks, in bedding and in carpet. By the time you notice fleas on the dog, the yard and house are already seeded.

Why it feels like the treatment failed

Pupae are the durable stage and they can wait for weeks before emerging. You treat the pet, things improve, and then a batch of pupae hatches and it looks like the product stopped working. It did not. It was never treating that stage.

The three-part fix

  • The pet, through your vet, on whatever product they recommend
  • The yard, monthly through the season, focused on shaded strips, fence lines and under decks
  • The inside, washing bedding hot, vacuuming thoroughly and emptying the vacuum outside

Why monthly and not quarterly

The flea life cycle runs three to four weeks in North Texas summer. A monthly visit catches each successive generation. A quarterly schedule leaves two entire cycles untouched, which is enough for the population to fully rebuild between visits.
